The summer outdoor problem
An August wedding in New Brunswick averages 24-28°C with 70-80% humidity. That combination is the hardest environment for bridal makeup. Foundation slides, mascara migrates, lipstick lifts, contour disappears. Most bridal makeup failures happen on humid summer days. The good news: with the right approach, summer outdoor makeup can look incredible — even better than indoor winter makeup, because the natural light is so flattering.
Skin prep for hot weather
The morning of a summer wedding:
- Cooler shower, not hot. Hot showers open pores and increase sweat for hours.
- Lighter moisturiser than winter. Heavy moisturiser + humidity = sliding foundation.
- Sweatproof primer. Milk Makeup Hydro Grip or Becca First Light Priming Filter are popular choices. NOT a silicone-only primer in heat.
- Translucent powder pressed lightly after moisturiser, before foundation — locks the prep.
Foundation strategy for summer
- Lighter coverage, built up where needed. Full coverage cakes faster in heat.
- Long-wear formulas. Estée Lauder Double Wear, Make Up For Ever HD, Pat McGrath Skin Fetish all designed for endurance.
- Avoid hydrating dewy foundations. Save the glow for cooler months.
- Set with translucent powder generously on the T-zone, lightly on the cheeks.
Eyes that survive summer
Eye products are the most vulnerable in heat. Tactics:
- Eye primer is mandatory. Urban Decay Primer Potion. No skipping.
- Waterproof mascara. Lancome Hypnose Waterproof or Maybelline Lash Stiletto Waterproof.
- Cream shadow under powder shadow. Locks in colour.
- Waterproof liner. Stila Stay All Day or Tarte Tarteist.
- Strip lashes glued with waterproof adhesive (Duo or DUO Brush-On Striplash).
Blush and contour for outdoor light
Outdoor natural light at midday WASHES OUT subtle blush. Brides who look flushed in person sometimes look pale in photos. Compensate:
- Use slightly more pigmented blush than the trial
- Cream blush, then powder over it for staying power
- Bronzer in moderation — adds dimension under bright light
- Contour should be subtle outdoors (sun shadows do work for you)
The lip strategy
- Stained over painted. A lip stain underneath the lipstick survives drinks, food, and the heat better.
- Long-wear lipstick. Charlotte Tilbury Matte Revolution, MAC Retro Matte Liquid Lipstick.
- Avoid glosses outdoors. They attract hair, slide, and feel uncomfortable in humidity.
- Lip liner anchors everything. Match to the lipstick.
Setting spray for summer
The most important step for outdoor summer makeup:
- Urban Decay All Nighter: 16-hour, sweatproof claims, performs.
- Skindinävia Bridal Spray: Designed for humid environments.
- Mac Fix+ followed by All Nighter: Double-spray for extreme heat.
Apply liberally at the end of the application. Mid-day, a quick mist on the T-zone refreshes without disturbing makeup.
Hot-weather touch-up adjustments
The standard touch-up kit changes for summer:
- Add a small spritz of setting spray to the kit
- Carry more blotting papers (10+)
- Skip the moisturising lip balm — switch to a clear waxy balm (less melting)
- Bring extra translucent powder
Photography in bright outdoor light
Outdoor noon weddings have specific photo challenges:
- Risk of "raccoon eyes" in overhead sun (waterproof eye products, proper concealer)
- Risk of "washed-out face" in direct light (slightly stronger blush and lip compensate)
- Risk of shine in flash if photographer uses flash even outdoors (mattifying setting spray helps)
Sun protection on the wedding day
SPF is non-negotiable but tricky for makeup. The approach:
- Use an SPF moisturiser as your daily prep — applied BEFORE the artist arrives
- The artist will add SPF-containing primer if available
- Mid-day, if outside for sustained periods, use a powder SPF (Colorescience Sunforgettable) on the T-zone
- For very sun-intense outdoor weddings, consider an umbrella-shaded ceremony
"Summer outdoor bridal makeup can be the most beautiful kind — natural light is the most flattering light there is. The trick is building a face that survives heat and humidity, not one that fights it."
Common summer outdoor mistakes
- Dewy foundation in 90% humidity (slides off)
- Heavy moisturiser before makeup
- Skipping setting spray
- Forgetting waterproof eye products
- Pale-looking blush that photographs invisibly in sunlight
- Glossy lips in heat (slide, attract hair)
The short version
Lighter moisturiser, sweatproof primer, long-wear foundation, lock everything with setting spray. Waterproof eye products non-negotiable. Stronger blush and lip than trial dictated. Extra blotting papers. Compensate for the light. Embrace the humidity instead of fighting it.
